Do I need a toner or drum? You need both to use your printer, but you likely will not need to replace both of them right away. Toner cartridges customarily need to be replaced first since they hold the toner powder that creates the print. The drum unit is responsible for transferring the toner powder onto the page to create an image and is designed to last longer than a toner cartridge. The page yield, or approximate number of printed pages you get from a toner cartridge, is much less than the yield of a drum unit so it usually is the first to go. Once you have gone through 3 or 4 toner cartridges, it is probably time to replace the drum.
